How to Replace Swimming Pool Lights

Most swimming pools are equipped with at least one underwater light. And, like any light, the bulb can burn out and need replacing. Thankfully, pool lights are designed to be replaced without having to lower the water level of the pool. Simply detach the light’s outer casing from the side of the pool, pull it out of the water onto the pool’s edge and replace the bulb from there.

To replace a pool light, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Turn off all power to the pool lighting. Double-check the power is off by attempting to turn the pool lights on.
  2. Detach the pool light from the side of the pool by removing the screw(s).
  3. Dislodge the light from the wall of the pool and pull it onto the side of the pool.
  4. Remove the outer casing, exposing the bulb. Double-check the power is off by attempting to turn the pool lights on.
  5. Purchase a replacement bulb - it must be identical to the one in your pool. If in doubt, take your bulb to a local pool professional, who will be able to assist.
  6. Using a towel to hold the bulbs, replace the faulty light with the replacement.
  7. Put the outer casing back on the bulb.
  8. Test the light works by turning on the power.
  9. Reattach the light to the side of the pool.
  10. Test the light works underwater.

If you followed the steps correctly but are still having issues, you may be dealing with a more serious electrical problem. In this case, be sure to contact a pool professional and have them investigate your light.
