Viron XT Pump Troubleshooting

The Viron XT variable speed pump is one of the most efficient and intelligent on the market. Whether you own a Viron XT or are looking to buy one, it’s handy to know the possible error codes that display if the pump encounters an issue of any kind in order to troubleshoot the problem yourself to avoid technician visits and get you back in the pool sooner.

While the Viron XT very rarely experiences issues, here are some basic troubleshooting tips:

Fault Codes

HI T

Short for high temperature, this fault code displays when the control system is abnormally hot. Naturally, the XT will attempt to slow down operation to reduce the heat being generated to ensure it can continue operating. If it does this successfully, it will display SAFE.

Possible causes include:

   -   Extreme ambient temperatures or incredibly hot weather conditions.
   -   Poor airflow over the motor, restricting the pump's natural cooling processes.

Solutions include:

   -   Checking whether the motor is correctly or sufficiently ventilating to allow the pump to cool itself down.
   -   Remove any debris or other obstructions which may be covering the pump.

HI A

If your pump displays the HI A code, it means the motor is drawing excessive current.

Possible causes include:

   - The wrong impeller being fitted on the unit.
   -   Damaged or worn bearings/seal.
   -   1HP control fitted to a 2HP motor.
   -   Windings partially shorted.

Lo V

Short for low voltage, this code indicates that the flow of voltage to the main is too low. The XT will attempt to run when the voltage is low, reducing its speed slightly to accommodate, but will cease operation and display Lo V if it is below 200VAC.

Possible causes include:

   -   Poor power supply to the site.
   -   Excessive cable length or an undersized cable, which can drastically reduce voltage.
   -   The load on the circuit is too great, which can occur if there are multiple pieces of equipment sharing the circuit, such as an air conditioner.

BSUC

BSUC displays if the rotor is stuck or too stiff, preventing it from starting. Alternatively, it can mean that two phases are short-circuited. This is often a mechanical fault and not a controller issue, so be sure to check the motor before fixing a controller.

Troubleshooting

In the unlikely event that your Viron XT appears to be operating incorrectly or not to its full potential, you can try these DIY troubleshooting steps.

Is water not circulating properly?

If water does not appear to be circulating properly, it can be due to a dirty/full basket and/or filter or incorrectly set valves.

Possible solutions:

   -   Thoroughly clean the pump basket and filter, removing all debris and other possible obstructions.
   -   Adjust the valves accordingly.

Air bubbles in the pump basket?

Common causes for air bubbles in the pump basket include:

   -   Blocked air within the circuit.
   -   Your pool water level is too low.
   -   The pump lid is incorrectly sealed.

Possible solutions include:

   -   Purging the circuit.
   -   Checking your pool’s water level and refill accordingly.
   -   Check the pump lid and seal properly to ensure no air can enter or escape.

There appear to be air intakes, what do I do?

Air intakes can occur if the pump’s fittings are not properly tightened or if the fitting seals are incorrectly positioned or damaged.

Possible solutions include:

   -   Tightening the pump fittings.
   -   Changing or replacing the fitting seals.

I can’t see any air in the circuit or basket, but the pressure is low.

If you notice the pressure is lower than normal but can’t see any air in the circuit or basket, there is likely debris inside the pump obstructing the flow.

Possible solutions include:

   -   Removing debris manually by opening the lid and removing the basket.
   -   If debris remains, the pump will need to be dismantled to access the impeller.
   -   Warning - these operations must be carried out by a qualified AstralPool technician.
