Chlorine-based pool sanitisers are the most effective products for effectively eliminating bacteria from your swimming pool. Four primary types of chlorine sanitisers are available, each offering specific benefits. They come in various forms, including liquid, tablets, granules and powder.

These different forms can impact various aspects of your pool, such as pH levels and shock treatment. These chlorine types are un-stabilised, meaning they lack cyanuric acid, which shields the chlorine from sun degradation.

Sodium Hypochlorite: With a 10% to 20% chlorine concentration, sodium hypochlorite is best suited for pools with high calcium hardness. Highly effective in fighting against microorganisms and stain removal.

Calcium Hypochlorite: The most popular type, boasting approximately 65% chlorine content. It's commonly used in small home pools, as it's safe and easy to use. It also dissolves quickly and is not affected by temperature, making it gentle on surfaces.

Compared to their un-stabilised counterpart, Trichlor and Dichlor are stabilised chlorine types, as they contain cyanuric acid for protection against sunlight.

Trichlor: Known for its high chlorine saturation, Trichlor can affect your pool's pH levels. Nevertheless, it's a top choice for regular pool sanitisation.

Dichlor: This chlorine type has a neutral pH level, making it ideal for those who wish to avoid pH fluctuations. Like Trichlor, it has a high chlorine saturation and dissolves quickly. Suits for spas.
