5 Reasons Why You Should Upgrade to a Variable Speed Pump

Why invest in a variable speed pump?

Your pump is the heart of your pool. It circulates water around your pool and through your pool system, ensuring the water can be adequately filtered and sanitised. With so much relying on your pump, we recommend installing a quality and reliable pump from a trusted brand and retailer. But, which pump should you buy, single-speed, two-speed or variable speed? It all comes down to personal preference and lifestyle, but there are attractive benefits to owning a variable speed pump.

Here are 3 advantages to variable speed pumps:

Lower Energy Consumption

Variable speed pool pumps are far more efficient compared to single-speed and two-speed pumps as they allow you to control the speed (RPM) of the pump, whether low or high or anywhere in between. Unlike single-speed and two-speed pumps, which only have fixed speeds, variable speed pumps do not need to run at full power all the time to keep your pool water clean. In fact, when you’re filtering your water, your pump can run at a much lower speed than when it’s doing more demanding jobs, such as running a water feature. On average, a pool owner tends to save more than 80 per cent on electricity costs when upgrading to a variable speed pump.

Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled Motors (TEFC)

A big advantage of owning a variable speed pump is the totally enclosed fan cooled motor (TEFC). This cooling system, which is not a feature of traditional single-speed and two-speed pumps, stops ambient moisture, dust and salt from accessing the inside of the motor, avoiding damage and early failure. Most single-speed and two-speed pumps incorporate an air-cooled design, which draws air in from the bottom front of the motor and passes this ambient air over the motor windings. While this method is effective for cooling the pump, it also exposes the pump's motor to damaging particles.

Quieter Operation

Single speed pool pumps are loud at the best of times due to the high speed that the motor operates. Once a pool pump starts failing, it is quite common for the internal bearings to start making noise, which makes an already loud pump louder. Of course, there will be times when you need to run your variable speed pump at higher speeds, which will be louder, but for the most part, when variable speed pumps are operating at low RPMs, they are so quiet that it can be difficult to determine whether or not the pump is running.

When it comes to pool anatomy, the pump is like the pool's heart. Its job is to circulate water through the filtration system. If you've been considering buying a variable speed pool pump ( also known as the multi-speed pump), you've probably heard it could save you money on energy costs. But maybe you're still not sure the potential savings are worth the pump's price tag. Before you shell out the cash for a fancy new pump, learn how it will put money back in your pocket and what makes it a superior choice.

Less power = More Savings $$$

When you choose a variable-speed pool pump, you’ll have a higher up-front cost, but bigger savings over time. Typically, pool owners who switch to variable-speed pumps recover the cost of the pump in energy savings in less than two years. You could save up to 83 percent in annual energy costs (give or take, depending on where you live and other variables) just by upgrading your pool pump. Quiet Operation slider image

Quiet Operation

Variable- speed pumps are much quieter than the other two options. The quieter operation is one of the biggest benefits people notice right away. Because the pumps aren't always running at the highest speed, they make less noise overall. Less noise leads to more peaceful pool time and happier neighbours!

Convenient Control slider image

Convenient Control

The best part about the various speeds and modes of variable-speed pumps is that you don’t have to control them manually. You can set schedules and let the pump run on its own. This enables you to program the pump to dial down for quiet times and ramp up for quick cleaning. For example, AstralPool Viron variable-speed pumps are compatible with Viron Connect which allows you to control your pool wirelessly via the Connect My Pool App.

Better Filtration slider image

Better Filtration

Water filtration performs best at slower rates, the slower you can pass the water via a filter with less turbulence, the better the quality of filtration. 90% of pool operation can happen at the slowest rate (ensuring turnover is still maintained) the benefit of having a variable speed pump is that is can be adjusted in real time to meet the 10% or more requirements. Typically, pool owners who switch to variable-speed pumps recover the cost of the pump in energy savings in less than two years.

Longer Product Life slider image

Longer Product Life

Pump motors don’t last forever, but running at lower speeds is less taxing on them, leading to increased operating life. Heat is the primary enemy of most motor components. Just as power and noise are greatly reduced at lower speeds, so too is heat generated by the motor, leading to considerably less stress on mechanical and electrical components.

Now that you know the benefits of variable-speed pumps, it's clear why these models cost slightly more than the alternatives and can actually help you save money over time. Talk to your pool professional to see which variable-speed pool pump is right for your pool.
