How to Fix a Green Pool With 5 Simple Steps

greenpool1

Pool water can turn green due to the presence of algae, which can overgrow, especially in hot weather, often surprising pool owners overnight during warmer months. This issue usually stems from an imbalance or lack of chlorine in the water.

Although chlorine is an effective sanitiser, even a slight drop in chlorine levels for just one day can trigger an algae outbreak. Therefore, it's crucial to check chlorine levels to avoid any unpleasant surprises frequently.

Fortunately, you can restore your pool to optimal health without having to drain it by following these 5 simple steps:

  1. Remove the pool cleaner from the pool.
  2. Check the filtration system for any problems or malfunctions and rectify them if required.
  3. Brush the walls and floor to dislodge the algae into the pool water. Rake up any debris from the bottom of the pool floor. Make sure all baskets are clear.
  4. Backwash the filter.
  5. Return the valve to the filter and turn on the pump.

Following these steps, you can effectively address a green pool and enjoy clear, sparkling water in no time.

Green Pool Treatment Based on Severity

If the pool is dark green and the bottom is not visible

  • Adjust the pH of the water to 7.0-7.4.
  • Add 2kg of Purifier as per instructions (for vinyl pools, dissolve in water first).
  • Add 2.5L of Pool Algaecide by pouring it around the edge of the pool. Keep the filter running for at least 24 hours. If the pool doesn't turn milky after 4 hours, add a further 2kg of Purifier.

The pool may have varying degrees of cloudiness, which is the dead algae. Once the pool water is clear, it is advisable to test for phosphates and treat with the appropriate dosage of Phosphate Remover to prevent algae from re-occurring.

If the pool is a mid-range green pool

  • Add 2kg of Purifier and 2.5L of Pool Algaecide. Keep the filter running for 24 hours.

If the pool is light green

  • Adding 500g of Purifier, 1L of Long life Algaecide, and 1 x Sparkle Tab or 200ml of Clarifier.
Run the filter for 24 hours.

What to do depending on the filter I have?

For cartridge pool filters

Monitor your pressure gauge when using Clarifier, and when the pressure reaches a high level, remove the cartridge and rinse it clean.

For all pool filters

After treating your pool water, thoroughly clean your filter using Filter Cleaner.

Best practices to avoid a green pool

Skim the surface regularly

Use your pool net daily to remove leaves and other floating debris from the top of the pool. It's easier to remove debris before it sinks to the bottom.

Regular water testing

Take a water sample to your local pool store for a monthly computer analysis. Early detection of pool water problems can help you prevent issues before they become major.

Maintain a proper chlorine level

Keep your chlorine level between 2.0 and 4.0 ppm to prevent algae growth in your swimming pool. Proper chlorine levels are crucial in maintaining a clean and healthy pool.

Dealing with a green pool caused by algae can be frustrating, but with regular maintenance and quick action, you can keep your pool clear all year round. Need help? Contact your local pool technician or visit your nearest pool store for expert advice and professional water testing.
