8 Way to Make Your Pool More Eco-Friendly

We’re in an era where we are excitingly being more conscious of our impacts on the environment. Swimming pools are quintessential to Australian culture but as climate change becomes a major concern for all of us, we all need to think about the steps we can take to protect the world we live in. Here we take a look at the things we can do to reduce the impact our pools on the environment.

  1. Check for pool leaks

Pool leaks will add to the overall water loss your pool will experience each day. Depending on how rapid the leak is dripping, in some cases you could experience water loss of over 20,000 litres in a year. Luckily, it’s very avoidable – by regularly checking areas of your pool that may be susceptible to a leak (pipe linings, around lights, in corners, pool equipment and the throat of the skimmer). If you find a leak, learn how to fix it.

  1. Choose an alternative pool system

Traditional-chlorine pools require chemicals to remain healthy and kill bacteria and algae but unfortunately the use of these chemicals may contribute to local ozone pollution. As an alternative, mineral pools require a minute amount of chlorine significantly reducing this risk.

  1. Use a pool cover

One of the most effective ways to save water and energy is to use a pool cover, particularly in a hot country like Australia. Better yet, use a product designed for its eco-friendly quality, a liquid pool blanket. Pool covers also reduce the need for pool cleaning, which saves extra energy (and time). Ideally, for maximum benefit, you should cover your pool whenever it’s not in use.

  1. Add a windbreak

A pool cover can cut down on debris and evaporation, but that’s not the only thing that can help. Windbreaks not only provide privacy; they also make your pool eco-friendly by lessening the amount of water evaporation and helping to keep out debris that need energy to filter out. Not to mention that they provide relief from harsh winds, and whatever dirt and dust they may be blowing around. Windbreaks come in many different forms. Anything from a fence to a custom-ordered windbreak to fit your pool dimensions will do the trick. If you want to be extra-green, you can even plant your own windbreak using trees, shrubs, or local foliage.

  1. Switch to energy-efficient pool products

Today’s top brands offer energy-efficient pool products such as cleaners, pumps, and filters. Pool pumps particularly, can be the second largest consumption of energy in a household (following heating and air conditioning). Variable-speed pumps are more eco-friendly than their single-speed counterparts because they require lower power usage. They can also be programmed to meet the specific needs of your pool, and meanwhile save you big bucks each year. For maximal efficiency, try a Climate Care Certified pump. Click here to find out more about all the benefits you can get from switching to a variable-speed pump.

  1. Switch to a solar power heating system

Solar pool heating is becoming more and more popular in Australia. We are fortunate in that many areas enjoy a warm climate and a lot of sunshine. A solar power heating system is by far the most eco-friendly way to heat a pool. Solar-powered pool heaters use a series of tubes that absorb heat from the sun to warm the water after it passes through the filtration system. As a further plus they are relatively easy to install. While switching to a solar heater involves an initial investment (Installation costs normally range between $3,000-$6,000), the returns will be worth it in the end.

  1. INVEST IN AN IN-FLOOR CLEANING SYSTEM

To make your pool more eco-friendly, you need to minimise the use of chemicals in your pool cleaning regime, and one of the best ways of doing this is to invest in an in-floor cleaning system. Take AstralPool’s Net’N’CLEAN in-floor cleaning system for example, it works through a series of nozzles which are embedded in the pool floor that can efficiently clean the entire pool and circulate your pool chemicals. It also helps warm (or cool) water for even distribution and a consistent result.

  1. USE SMART POOL TECHNILOGY

Smart pool technology enables many of the features of your swimming pool to be automated. Automated pool systems can control everything from pool lights to sanitation. You can automate your pool chemistry to where it uses exactly what is needed, and also set your pump, pool lights, heater and cleaners to shut off and on only as needed, using less energy for all your equipment.

Remember, the less energy you use, the greener you are. Plus, by following these tips it would also saves you time and money. We can that a win-win-win situation!

We are currently living in an era where people are increasingly aware of their impact on the environment. In Australia, swimming pools are an essential part of the culture, but the owners face the challenge of making them more sustainable. With climate change becoming a major concern for all of us, it is important to think about the steps we can take to protect our planet.

Understanding Pool Sustainability

To make your pool more sustainable, it's crucial to go beyond just maintaining clean pool water. It's about creating a more eco-friendly oasis that goes with our responsibility to the environment. Implementing sustainable practices allows pool owners to positively impact the environment, preserving it for future generations.

Remember, the less energy you use, the greener you are. Plus, by following these tips, it would also save you time and money. We call that a win-win situation! Every eco-friendly step, whether fixing leaks to prevent water wastage, using energy-efficient equipment, or opting for solar heating, contributes to a larger global effort to combat climate change.

Choosing Eco-Friendly Pool Systems

Choosing an alternative to a traditional chlorine pool, such as salt or a mineral water pool, can help save you money and be more environmentally friendly. Mineral pools, in particular, can help reduce the amount of chemicals needed to keep the water healthy and balanced. Some systems, such as MagnaPool, even allow for the waste water* to be repurposed as irrigation for your grass.

*Note: Backwash water must be diluted before reusing as irrigation
